Hmm is so versatile. It can have many connotations and many different spellings. It can also be used to create or avoid awkwardness. It can be used to annoy someone to no end or it can keep you from annoying someone. Here is a short dictionary of Hmm’s.
- Hm-The nonchalant hm. This can also be the mildly interested or impressed hm, when used vocally and succinctly without drawing out the m.
- Hm.-(Note the period) This is the nonchalant hm with a slight air of wryness to it. This is more along the lines of the unimpressed hm.
- Hmm-The thoughtful hmm. This hmm is to be used when thoroughly or seriously considering an idea, topic, subject, etc. This hmm, depending on the tone, also has the power to be disagreeable when used vocally with a descending tone as the m is drawn out.
- Hmmm-This is the positive and interested hmmm. To be used when genuinely excited about the subject towards which the hmmm is directed.
- Hmmmmm-This is the impertinent hmmmmm when written. It is used to annoy people or put them on edge. This is generally used when someone says something you don’t care to either confirm or deny. This hmmmmm is a completely nutural answer. When repeated after everything the say, with no other remarks on your part besides the hmmmmm it become the impertinent hmmmmm and a great way to annoy someone and drive them crazy with unease about what you’re thinking.
So the next time you use hmm, make sure you are using the right one to get your point across.
